Frank Hornby de uitvinder van het Meccano startte pas in 1920 met de productie van modeltreinen. De vroege Hornby treinen waren opgebouwd uit standaard onderdelen, zodat men ze uit elkaar kon halen en weer in elkaar zetten . De standaard spoorbreedte was spoor 0. Hornby dacht aanvankelijk te kunnen volstaan met een steeds uitgebreider bouwdoossysteem zoals bij Meccano maar dat bleek te beperkt.
Na 1925 werden uitsluitend traditioneel vervaardigde treinen geproduceerd.
Meccano was een van de laatste fabrikanten die nog spoor 0 gebruikten.
